So yesterday my gf & I went to see the latest Star Trek movie by JJ Abrams and here is my opinion on it...
As a long time fan of ST, especially of "The Next Generation" serie, I was really eager to see the movie. But I was also torn between my excitation to see a new Star Trek and my anxiousness that the movie will fall short of my expectations and definitely kill the license (hurt badly by the latest serie "Enterprise" if you want my opinion).
So what did I think of the movie ?
There are really two stories: the movie plot (Earth is in danger, must save it blah blah blah) and the story of the creation of the original crew. The movie plot on his own was not very original and reminded me a lot of the Star Trek: Nemesis movie. But it was clever enough to provide a way to "reboot" the ST universe, wich came at a pleasant surprise to me as I didn't read any spoilers before going to see the movie (and I wont give any too). On the other hand, I really dig the way the movie show us the creation of the original crew (kirk, spock, uhura, zulu, chekov, scotty, mc koy..). It's moving (especially the intro scene), interesting for newcomers and still full of clues for the hardcore fanboys (like me).
The visuals are stunning, the actors are _really_ good. Especially Zachary Quinto as Spock (Silar in Heroes) and Chris Pine as Kirk. It seems like it has always been them. I also liked Simon Pegg (Shawn of the Dead) as Scotty, even if we dont see him that much.
I missed the original music theme, it doesn't show up until the end credits. I think they used the "original serie" score instead of a modern version, wich I think was a nice touch.
All in all, I quite liked it, much more than the last movies and the last serie. It's like a pilot episode of a new serie: it's tricky to put a good story AND focus on the characters as well. You want to see more. Now, with the "reboot", I know there will be (many) followups, I cant wait to see the next one and see that crew in new adventures.
As a Star Trek fan, I thanks JJ Abrams to have saved my favorite universe and bring it back to the front of the science fiction world (take that Star Wars) !
